What’s the difference between a celebrant and a solemniser?

The main difference

In Ireland, the key difference between a celebrant and a solemniser is legal authority. A celebrant is a person who creates and conducts ceremonies, often with a strong focus on the couple’s story, values and preferred ceremony style. A solemniser is a person who is legally authorised to solemnise a marriage in Ireland and is registered on the official Register of Solemnisers.

The terms can overlap. Someone can be both a celebrant and a registered solemniser. However, simply calling yourself a wedding celebrant does not give you the legal authority to marry a couple.

What a registered solemniser does

A registered solemniser can conduct a legally binding marriage ceremony when the couple have completed the required legal process. Couples normally need to give at least three months’ notice to the Civil Registration Service, attend the marriage notification appointment and obtain their Marriage Registration Form.

The solemniser has legal responsibilities during the ceremony. The required declarations must be made, and two witnesses aged 18 or over must be present. For religious and secular ceremonies, the Marriage Registration Form is signed as part of the ceremony and returned to the Civil Registration Service within one month.

What a celebrant does

A celebrant can concentrate on creating a personalised ceremony. They may write the ceremony script, help with vows and readings, tell the couple’s story and include rituals or symbolic elements.

If the celebrant is not a registered solemniser, their wedding ceremony is not legally binding. The couple would need to complete the legal marriage separately, for example through a civil ceremony or with another registered solemniser.

For couples planning a wedding in Ireland, the most important question is therefore not simply whether someone is a celebrant. Ask whether they are a registered solemniser if you want the ceremony itself to create your legal marriage. The official Register of Solemnisers should be checked before booking. This distinction allows couples to decide whether they want a purely symbolic celebration, a legal ceremony, or one professional who can provide both the personalised celebrant experience and the legal solemnisation.
