Typical celebrant prices in Ireland
The going rate for a professional wedding celebrant in Ireland varies considerably. Current Irish wedding and celebrant sources commonly place professional fees around €450 to €900, although some providers charge below or above this range depending on experience, location and the service supplied.
A simpler ceremony with limited preparation may cost less, while a highly personalised ceremony involving several meetings, extensive script writing, rehearsal attendance and long-distance travel can cost considerably more. These figures should therefore be treated as a market guide rather than an official price list.
What affects a celebrant’s fee?
A celebrant’s fee normally covers professional time before, during and sometimes after the wedding. This can include an initial consultation, meetings with the couple, writing the ceremony, preparing personal vows, selecting readings and rituals, revising the script and communicating with the venue or wedding planner.
Travel is another common factor. Some celebrants include travel within a defined radius, while others charge mileage or accommodation when a wedding is outside their normal area. Ask whether VAT is included where applicable.
When comparing quotes, ask for the full package in writing. A €450 quote and an €800 quote may cover very different services. Check the number of meetings, level of ceremony customisation, script revisions, rehearsal support, travel, ceremony length and cancellation or date-change arrangements.
Check whether the celebrant is also a solemniser
For an Irish wedding, legal status is particularly important. A celebrant is not automatically authorised to conduct a legally binding marriage. The person must be registered as a solemniser to legally solemnise the marriage.
If your celebrant is not a registered solemniser, you may need a separate legal ceremony. If you want the personalised celebrant ceremony to be your actual legal wedding, choose a professional who is both a celebrant and a registered solemniser.
The professional fee is also separate from the State marriage notification fee. Couples normally pay €200 when giving notice through the Civil Registration Service. Therefore, when budgeting, allow separately for the State process and the celebrant or solemniser’s professional fee.
