How much is a solemniser in Ireland?

Typical solemniser fees

There is no single government-set price for an independent wedding solemniser in Ireland. Private solemnisers and celebrants set their own professional fees, so prices vary according to experience, location, travel, preparation and the level of personalisation offered.

Current Irish wedding sources commonly place independent solemniser fees at around €450 to €900, with some experienced professionals charging more for highly bespoke ceremonies or extensive travel. Published Irish wedding pricing also shows humanist and secular solemniser services in similar ranges. These figures are useful for budgeting, but they are not an official national tariff.

What you are paying for

A solemniser’s fee can include much more than conducting the ceremony on the wedding day. A professional may spend time meeting the couple, discussing their story, preparing the ceremony structure, writing or editing the script, helping with vows and readings, communicating with the venue and attending a rehearsal.

Travel can affect the final price, particularly when a solemniser is travelling a long distance. Some providers include travel within a specified area, while others add mileage, accommodation or other expenses. VAT may also apply depending on the provider.

Before booking, ask for a written quotation that explains exactly what is included. Check the number of consultations, script preparation, ceremony duration, rehearsal arrangements, travel costs and what happens if the venue or date changes.

Do not confuse the fee with the State notification charge

The professional solemniser fee is separate from the Irish State’s marriage notification fee. Couples normally have to give at least three months’ notice and pay a €200 notification fee at their marriage notification appointment.

That €200 is not a private solemniser’s fee. It is the State charge for the notification process.

If you want a legally binding wedding ceremony, also check that your chosen professional is currently registered as a solemniser. A celebrant may offer a lower price but cannot legally solemnise your marriage unless they have the required registration. Comparing the complete service, legal status and inclusions is more useful than comparing headline prices alone.
