Understand the legal route
Becoming a registered solemniser in Ireland is not simply a matter of completing a general wedding celebrant course. Legal authority to solemnise marriages comes through registration in the Register of Solemnisers. The route depends on the category of solemniser and the organisation through which the person is nominated.
Religious and secular solemnisers are generally connected with recognised organisations that nominate people for registration. A person interested in this career should therefore identify the relevant religious or secular organisation first and establish its current requirements.
Training and nomination
Celebrant training can be useful preparation. Courses can develop skills in public speaking, ceremony writing, presentation, client consultations and ceremony planning. However, completing a private celebrant course does not automatically make someone legally authorised to marry couples.
The organisation through which you seek registration may have its own membership, training, experience and conduct requirements. For a religious route, the relevant religious body determines its own requirements and nomination process. For a secular route, the appropriate recognised secular organisation has its own process.
There is also a separate route for civil registrars. HSE registrars conduct civil marriage ceremonies as part of their employment, so becoming an HSE registrar is different from becoming an independent religious or secular solemniser.
Check the current official requirements
Because nomination and registration requirements can change, prospective solemnisers should check the current Irish Government information on the Register of Solemnisers and contact the relevant organisation directly before paying for training or setting up a business.
Once registered, a solemniser has legal responsibilities. The role is not simply public speaking: the solemniser must follow the legal requirements for the marriage ceremony, ensure the necessary declarations are made and deal correctly with the Marriage Registration Form.
If your goal is to become a wedding celebrant who can legally marry couples in Ireland, plan around solemniser registration from the beginning. General celebrant training can provide useful professional skills, but registration is what provides the legal authority to solemnise marriages.
